吴祖强（1927—），生于北京。1947年入南京国立音乐院理论作曲系学习。1950年转入中央音乐学院，1952年毕业留校任教。后曾任中央音乐学院院长。吴祖强作有管弦乐、协奏曲、舞剧、大合唱、室内乐、独奏曲等各种体裁和形式的音乐作品，其中较重要的有：弦乐四重奏、交响音画《在祖国的大地上》、清唱剧《与洪水搏斗》，以及与杜鸣心合作的舞剧《鱼美人》、《红色娘子军》的音乐和与刘德海合作的琵琶与管弦乐队协奏曲《草原小姐妹》等。此外，他曾将著名的传统乐曲《二泉映月》、《听松》改编为弦乐合奏曲，《江河水》改编为二胡与管弦乐队合奏曲，《春江花月夜》改编为琵琶与管弦乐队协奏曲，很受观众欢迎。他还创作过一些独奏、独唱曲和电影、话剧音乐。除音乐创作外，吴祖强还著有《曲式与作品分析》。
